Olfactory Learning Supports an Adaptive Sugar-Aversion Gustatory Phenotype in the German Cockroach

چکیده

An association of food sources with odors prominently guides foraging behavior in animals. To understand the interaction olfactory memory and preferences, we used glucose-averse (GA) German cockroaches. Multiple populations cockroaches evolved a gustatory polymorphism where glucose is perceived as deterrent enables GA to avoid eating glucose-containing toxic baits. Comparative behavioral analysis using an operant conditioning paradigm revealed that learning guide decisions. Cockroaches learned associate specific fructose (phagostimulant, reward) within only 1 h session, caffeine (deterrent, punishment) after three sessions. Glucose acted reward wild type (WT) cockroaches, but innately attractive odor was associated glucose. Olfactory retained for at least 3 days Our results reveal tastants can serve potent or punishment associative learning, which reinforces preferences. therefore, resistance sugar-containing may also generalize their baits contain same similar even if they do not

Changes in taste neurons support the emergence of an adaptive behavior in cockroaches.

In response to the anthropogenic assault of toxic baits, populations of the German cockroach have rapidly evolved an adaptive behavioral aversion to glucose (a phagostimulant component of baits). We hypothesized that changes in the peripheral gustatory system are responsible for glucose aversion. In both wild-type and glucose-averse (GA) cockroaches, D-fructose and D-glucose stimulated sugar-gu...

Effect of Fipronil on Bait Formulation-Based Aversion in the German Cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae)

We examined the effects of 3 active ingredients in baits containing glucose on a behaviorally resistant (glucose-averse, T-164) strain of Blattella germanica L. Baits with glucose and hydramethylnon or chlorpyrifos killed few T-164 individuals; however, ÞpronilÐglucose baits killed 60% of the cockroaches by day 14. Although ingestion levels were low, ÞpronilÐglucose baits were consumed more tha...

Alternate-2 disjunction in the german cockroach.

The evidence in support of two types of alternate disjunction in translocation heterozygotes from the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), is reviewed. When unique cytomorphological features occur in the translocation figure, the two types of alternate disjunction are identifiable regardless of the angle of observation. Photographs supporting this contention are presented for alternate-1...

Gustatory and olfactory dysfunction in laryngectomized patients.

UNLABELLED After total laryngectomy surgery, nasal airflow is moved permanently to the tracheostomy opening, compromising the contact of odorant molecules with the nasal cavity, which may reflect changes in the olfactory and gustatory perception in these individuals. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the functions of smell and taste in total laryngectomized patients. STUDY DESIGN a study of series. M...

Sugar-regulated cation channel formed by an insect gustatory receptor.

Insects sense the taste of foods and toxic compounds in their environment through the gustatory system. Genetic studies using fruit flies have suggested that putative seven-transmembrane gustatory receptors (Grs) expressed in gustatory sensory neurons are required for responses to specific tastants. We reconstituted sugar responses of Bombyx mori Gr-9 (BmGr-9), a silkworm Gr, in two heterologou...
